Superior Accuracy, Resolution, & Repeatability
The Microlution 363-S provides 2 micron positioning accuracy, 50 nanometer resolution, and 200 nanometer repeatability throughout its 63mm travel in the X, Y and Z directions. This level of performance allows machining operations to be completed on micro-scale features that demand tight absolute tolerances. This performance is enabled by the use of high-resolution, high-accuracy Heidenhain optical linear encoders mounted to precision-ground granite sub-structures under the X, Y and Z stages. These specially selected encoders feature short grating periods which help reduce the magnitude of difficult-to-correct short period errors.

Automatic Tool Changer Highlights Best-In-Class Features

The Microlution 363-S features a 36 pocket Automatic Tool Changer (ATC). This tool changing system is capable of supporting tools ranging from .002" - 0.125" in diameter. The tools are held in a rotating carousel with a robotic arm moving tools between the spindle and the carousel. The rotating tool carousel can be easily removed and replaced resulting in a quick-change tool magazine system for easy expansion. In a situation where the machine is being utilized for multiple applications, each application can have its own tool carousel, leading to smooth and quick transitions between setups. The tools are directly chucked into the spindle, eliminating the need for a tool holder. The ATC system includes an integrated tool tip sensor that automatically determines tool length and diameter.

Innovative Workpiece & Spindle Mounting System
The Microlution 363-S uses a quick-change highly repeatable mounting system for both the workpiece and the spindle. The mounting system allows the workpiece and/or the spindle to be removed and replaced with sub-micron repeatability. This capability allows, for example, a machining operation to be interrupted, the workpiece to be removed, inspected and replaced without the need to re-register the part. In a situation where the machine is being used for multiple applications, each application can have its own workpiece pallet. This enables multiple users to easily transition from one setup to the next without losing their part registration.

This mounting system also allows the spindle to be removed and replaced with, for example, a laser distance sensor to perform metrology operations (e.g. surface roughness measurements, surface profile measurements, etc.) Similarly, multiple spindles (each with its own spindle mount) can be accurately implemented during a single machining process.

Small Footprint is Ideal For Office, Lab, or Production Floor
Special features of the Microlution 363-S provide ease-of-use beyond traditional machine tools. The overall size (4 sq. ft. footprint) and utility requirements (20A and 120VAC, and 6CFM of compressed air at 100psi) allow the 363-S to be easily installed in office, laboratory, or production floor settings. These and other ease-of-use features allow the 363-S to be up and running within 4 hours of delivery to the loading dock at a typical facility.

Full CNC Functionality
The integrated Delta Tau GeoBrick machine controller provides full CNC operation of the machine, supporting a standard set of G- and M- codes. The Microlution 363-S also features a custom interface circuitry to enable easy user access to digital and analog I/O limit inputs, and flag inputs.

Outstanding Contouring Performance
Contouring performance is critical in a machine tool and the Microlution 363-S combines its high-performance encoders with high specific-force linear motors. This combination allows high bandwidth tuning, a key ingredient in contouring performance. The ironless AC linear motors used throughout, produce zero cogging torque, reducing disturbance forces in the system and further increasing the dynamic performance of the stages. Finally, the motors provide high peak-acceleration capability, a critical feature in micro-machining applications due to unique cutting mechanics present at the micro-scale.
